FAQs

GENERAL
Is Joyous available in my state?
Joyous is currently available in: AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, IA, IL, IN, MA, ME, MI, MO, MT, NJ, NV, NY, OH, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VT, WA, WI, WY
How quickly can Joyous help me?
Joyous uses a low-dose ketamine protocol that can produce immediate calming effects, and can spark the beginning of gradual and consistent mental health improvement. Low-dose ketamine treatment can produce a heightened receptivity to therapy, allowing patients to practice therapy or self-care exercises to optimize treatment during the session. Over 89% of patients report improvements in depression and anxiety symptoms in the first month. Remember that every body is different and to trust the process. Many patients experience the biggest improvements in month 3 and 4 of treatment. Optimize your treatment outcomes by following our treatment courses to learn new skills and help heal unhealthy thought loops and build skills that last far beyond treatment.
Can I keep taking other medicatons?
Many medications are compatible with low-dose ketamine, including SSRIs and benzodiazepines. The list of contraindicated medications is short, but your Joyous medical provider will review your current medications and help you decide if our medication is a good fit for you. Many of our patients continue to take their antidepressant and anxiety medications throughout treatment without any issues. Be sure to bring your current list of medications to your consultation to review with your provider.
What does it feel like?
After about 15 minutes of taking your dose you may begin to feel a subtle calming and possible lightheadedness. Most people report having a positive experience with little-to-no side effects. However, you may feel a little tipsy and a bit “out of it” for 30-40 minutes. Many patients find the immediate effects to be very pleasant and a great time to reflect on their own thoughts, but if it doesn’t feel good for you then lowering the dose, or splitting your dose throughout the day, seems to reduce these side effects. You will begin to learn how ketamine affects you almost immediately. Over the first few weeks, we will track and adjust your dose based on how you feel. While you are learning, you may experience some side effects, for example lightheadedness or even nausea. All of these feelings are normal, and can be reduced through simple adjustments to the protocol.
Is ketamine safe?
Ketamine's safety profile is well-established in clinical settings like ours, making it a vital tool in medical practice. Its unique characteristic of not impairing the respiratory system contributes to its broad application and acceptability. Administered by our trained medical professionals in controlled doses, it's considered a safe anesthetic option for a wide range of patients. In fact, its safety is such that it's even used in surgeries with children. By adhering to stringent guidelines and protocols, we ensure that potential risks are minimized, reinforcing ketamine's position as a dependable choice within our healthcare environment.

FAQs

THERAPY
Can I do this with telehealth therapy?
Yes, pairing microdose ketamine treatment with telehealth (video / phone) therapy sessions is a great option. You can experience the benefits of psycholytic ketamine treatment from the comfort of home and experience breakthroughs in therapy through digital talk therapy.
Does insurance cover this?
The Joyous treatment costs $129/month (monthly subscription), with no long-term commitment. The Joyous for Therapists program, which connects your therapist with Joyous to help educate and train them to integrate ketamine into their sessions, is completely free! We want to help therapists understand the best practices and the latest research to guide them and guide our patients to make meaningful mental health improvements. Therapists do not get paid to join the program, and there is no incentive for them to recommend Joyous.
Is it safe to take before therapy?
Yes, it is considered safe to take low-dose ketamine before a therapy session. Joyous ketamine treatment uses very low doses of ketamine, between 15-120mg, which produces a psycholytic state (not a psychedelic state). This is described as a light, calm experience with a sense of mental spaciousness. This is an incredibly powerful state to help you make significant mental health progress, from learning new skills to reframing experiences. Unlike high dose ketamine treatments, the low-dose ketamine session keeps patients fully coherent and functional, able to engage with their environments. It's important not to drive or operate heavy machinery within 1-2 hours after taking their medication. If therapy is in-person, we recommend having a friend or family member drive you home after your session. If your therapy session is via telehealth (video or phone), you can take your medication about 15 minutes before your session and stay home to relax afterward.
What if I don't have a therapist?
Our Joyous for Therapists program is currently only for patients who already have a therapist that they'd like to talk to about pairing their treatments. This program is completely free and is available for all Joyous patients who would like to connect their therapist with Joyous. If you're already a Joyous patient, you have access to at-home therapy based practices in the Be Joyous patient portal under Joyous Courses. We highly recommend watching the videos to help you get the most from your treatment. If you find a therapist in the future and would like to connect us with them to train them to integrate ketamine into their therapy sessions, you can share their information with us at a later date.
I'm already a patient, how do I connect my therapist?
Current or new Joyous patients can start by clicking "connect your therapist" above and sharing your therapist information. You'll provide your therapist's email address and we'll reach out to them to see if they'd like to join our Joyous for Therapists training course. The course is completely free for them. We'll train them on how to integrate low-dose ketamine into their therapy sessions, including safety protocols, therapy guidance, and connect them with our network of licensed psychotherapists and researchers. If you would like us to share your information with them so they can track your progress on Joyous treatment, you can sign a release of information and once we verify their information, we can start sharing that with them and work together to help you reach your mental health goals!
